There were 156 Shigella isolates confirmed in 2016, compared with 112 in 2015. Shigella sonnei biotype a and biotype g were the most common species confirmed in 2016 with 31 and 55 cases, respectively. Shigella flexneri 6 Boyd 88 emerged this year with most cases having a history of recent travel to Samoa.

There were 135 Shigella isolates confirmed in 2013, compared with 121 in 2012. Shigella sonnei biotype a and biotype g were the predominant species confirmed prior to 2013. This year the two most common species were S. sonnei biotype a and S. flexneri.
